This morning I woke up to the
sound of dogs barking all over the place so I went out to check what was
happening outside and found out that the City Government of Muntinlupa has been
going around villages again to administer
the yearly project of Anti Rabies shots for dogs. This is because every summer,
when kids are out for vacation from school, based on studies, the occurrence of
rabies is on a higher level. Since children are almost out the whole day
playing, there is a greater chance of them for rabies exposure because there
are dogs owners who are quite lax in keeping their dogs in when the kids are
out.
So what is Rabies?
Rabies is a viral disease that
causes acute encephalitis in warm-blooded animals. The disease is zoonotic,
meaning it can be transmitted from one species to another, such as from dogs to
humans, commonly by a bite from an infected animal. For a human, rabies is
almost invariably fatal if post exposure prophylaxis is not administered prior
to the onset of severe symptoms. The rabies virus infects the central nervous
system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death.
Rabies can be prevented if dog
owners are responsible enough to know their responsibilities with their pets,
which includes, but is not limited to, having the yearly anti rabies shots.
That is why I make sure that my dogs (we used to have 2, but since dear Bambi
died a couple of months back =(, we now only have 1) gets the yearly shot.
So here is what Bho (our dog’s
name) got for her shot…
Let’s all be responsible this
summer and get the shot going so that our kids can enjoy a rabies free summer!
Happy Summer y’all! =)
